Unmanned Vehicles
by Michelle EauClaire - Wednesday February 15, 2012
Fellow editor Sara Jensen and myself just got back from a fascinating meeting with Oshkosh Corp.'s Chief Engineer of Unmanned Systems, John Beck. This isn't our first visit with the company, and it certainly won't be our last. The great thing about military vehicles is they don't have restrictions or regulations to adhere to. The technology should be the most effective—whatever keeps the soldiers safest. There is a strong feeling of pride in the office. Everyone seems to understand just how important their job is, protecting our armed forces, and they speak with passion and excitement about the new systems they are developing to help in whatever way they can. Our April issue will feature a couple of articles with a military swing to... -
Get a fracking clue!
- Sunday February 5, 2012
*For more information on the fracking industry, browse this compilation of news and articles . There has been a lot of press lately on the fracking industry, both as a thriving market for component manufacturers as well as a danger to people close to drill zones. Most recently, filmmaker Josh Fox of the fracking movie Gasland ( view the trailer here ) was arrested during a review of an EPA report claiming fracking had most likely been the cause of contaminated drinking water in Wyoming. Read more on his arrest here . People magazine even featured a small article in its February 6, 2012 issue entitled "Living with 'Fracking': Where the water catches fire" profiling a family in Wyoming with contaminated drinking... -

Emissions around the world
- Tuesday January 17, 2012
OEM Off-Highway's globally recognized Market Forecaster, Frank Manfredi, has announced that his company, Manfredi & Associates, is offering a multi-client study entitled Quarantined Markets? The Possible Isolating Impact of U.S. Emission Regulations On Used Construction Equipment Sales and Pricing . The study will highlight the unforeseen consequences created by the regulatory process put in place back in 1990. What effect will emission regulations have on used construction equipment following the Tier 4 Final regulations? The study is designed to answer the questions: Will Tier 4 equipment be saleable outside Tier 4 markets? How will equipment users respond to the increased cost of purchasing and operating Tier 4 machines... -
You down with OBD?
by Michelle EauClaire - Monday December 12, 2011How quickly time flies. It's already been a month since my last post. Tsk tsk! Recently I've been spending quite a bit of time researching the EPA On-Board Diagnostic regulations. They aren't new, since they were implemented alongside the EPA 2010 On-Highway emissions regulations (Re: Clean Diesel Truck and Bus Program; 66 FR 5002) but there are discussions now for implementing these regs on off-road vehicles. *The proposal is EPA Docket No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2005-0047* It gets mind-boggling how much OBD really entails, since it ranges from the regulations and legislation all the way to the technology and implementation. There are issues with hybrid systems, and there are no requirements drawn out yet (or that I have been able to find) to...
