Sales of Hybrid and Electric Trucks Could Double in 2012

Analysts at Pike Research are predicting hybrid and electric truck sales will double in 2012.

A new report from Pike Research says hybrid and electric medium- and heavy-duty truck sales will double in 2012. The report global sales will be over 19,000 for a growth of 92%. Beyond 2012, Pike Research reports sales will continue to grow 42% between 2011 and 2017.

Government emissions regulations and a desire from fleets to appear environmentally friendly to customers are two of the factors which analysts believe will contribute to the increase in sales.

Despite the optimistic forecasts, the cost of hybrid and electric vehicles could still be a hinderance to sales growth. The increased availability and popularity of vehicles running on alternative fuels could also prevent sales from being as high as predicted.
