U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will make $30 million in funding available for a research competition geared towards developing next generation energy storage technologies. Scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs are all encouraged to participate.
The goal of the competition is to improve performance and safety of energy storage devices for consumer use as well as those being developed by the Department of Defense for military applications.
Known as the Advanced Management and Protection of Energy-storage Devices (AMPED) program, this competition has the potential to:
- create a new generation of electric and hybrid-electric vehicles
- increase fuel efficiency of military generators, reducing the need for fuel convoys on the battlefield
- enable fuel efficient operations for the armed forces
- enhance the efficiency and reliability of the U.S. electricity grid
