Report Finds Biofuels Cause Four Times More Carbon Emissions

A report for the European Commission states biofuels cause four times more carbon emissions than fossil fuels.

A report for the European Commission has found biofuels can create up to four times more carbon emissions than fossil fuels.

The report indicates the displacement of food crops for fuel crops causes "indirect emissions," and that American soybeans are one of the worst examples of this. Since many soybean crops in America are now being used for fuel, the feed crops have to be grown elsewhere, such as the Brazilian rainforests, which causes emissions due to the clearing of land for the crops and transportation.

While some note that this study shows biofuels are not the "game changer" for alleviating climate change, the European Commission says more research is needed to fully understand the complex issue that is biofuels.
