UPS Adding 40 Hydraulic Hybrid Vehicles to its Fleet

UPS announces it will deploy 40 new hydraulic hybrid vehicles, which will help reduce emissions by 30% and increase fuel economy up to 35%.

UPS has announced it will add 40 new hydraulic hybrid vehicles (HHVs) to its fleet; 20 will be in Baltimore and the other 20 will be in Atlanta. The vehicles were jointly developed by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation and Parker Hannifin Corporation. Two power sources operate the vehicles--a fuel-efficient diesel combustion engine and an advanced series hydraulic hybrid. Regenerative braking enables the HHVs to store energy in the vehicles' hydraulic high-pressure accumulator, similar to how a battery in an electric vehicle would.

The HHVs are designed to improve fuel economy up to 35% and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions up to 30% over traditional diesel-powered vehicles. Deployment of the hybrid vehicles is partially supported by a grand from the U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities program.

Baltimore will receive its 20 HHVs immediately, while Atlanta will get its vehicles by the end of 2012.
