The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $1 million in funding to evaluate technologies which will enable hydrogen fuel to be more cost competitive. The goal is to achieve a $2 to $4 per gallon gasoline equivalent, or less, by 2020.
In order to meet this goal, projects that receive funding will be geared towards cost-effective and efficient materials and processes which produce hydrogene from renewable energy sources and natural gas. Funded projects will also evaluate production and delivery technologies.
Various methods of producing hdyrogen fuel will be analyzed, including:
- distributed production of hydrogen from biomass-derived renewable liquids
- distributed, semi-central and central water electrolysis
- solar high-temperature water splitting
- photoelectrochemical water splitting
- large-scale central hydrogen production through photolytic, fermentation and microbial electrolysis
