Congress hears testimony on creating policies to promote development of autonomous vehicles

Testimony at a recent congressional subcommittee hearing professed the need for the government to begin making policies regarding the development of autonomous vehicles.

On November 19, a congressional subcommittee heard testimony about the need for the government to begin making policy regarding the development of self-driving, or autonomous vehicles. However, the technology is said to still be 10 to 20 years away from being available to consumers.

The goal of the hearing was to discuss the potential of autonomous vehicles being available to consumers within the next 20 years, and how the government should address creating policies to encourage development of autonomous technology and use in the United States.

While much of the focus was on passenger vehicles, presenters did mention work being done in the commercial vehicle field with autonomous technologies.
