Vermeer Corporation and the engineering team responsible for its surface mining technology was recently inducted into the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame.

Vermeer is one of 15 inductees this year and was recognized for its innovative Terrain Leveler surface excavation machine (SEM). The Vermeer team responsible for the Terrain Leveler machine includes Mark Cooper, Managing Director of Specialty Excavation; Jeff Flahive, Engineering Manager; and Jim Hutchins, Senior Applications Engineer.

Vermeer introduced the Terrain Leveler concept to the mining sector in 2002 and it was designed to enhance efficiency and eliminate steps in the mining process,” says Cooper. “Today this technology is being adopted by leading mines across the globe and it is an honor to be recognized by our peers.”

The technology centers on a patented, industry-exclusive tilting cutter drum that aids production by keeping the drum level or to follow a mineral vein. It’s designed to eliminate the need for primary crushers, large loaders, and large mining haul trucks and associated permits, in addition to rippers, vertical drills and explosives.

A panel of experts and leaders in the fields of exploration, mining and processing determined the final inductees from a large field of nominations from the international mining community. The International Mining Hall of Fame is the only hall of fame to recognize the global innovators in the mining industry.

A gala dinner and presentation was held on February 16, 2015, at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO, in conjunction with the 2015 SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration) Annual Convention and Expo.
