As the heavy-duty equipment market continues to explore light weighting materials to reduce equipment wear and increase fuel efficiency, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced its support of automotive lightweight materials development.
Projects which will receive funding include the development and validation of modeling tools for higher performance carbon fiber composites and advanced steels, as well as the development of lightweight, high-strength alloys.
Caterpillar Inc., for example, will use its DOE award in conjunction with its own private investment to develop high-strength iron-based alloys that will allow for hgiher cylinder pressures while also providing weight savings.
