The KNOTT Hybrid Brake solution is a magnetic-mechanical brake assembly that combines a small packaging envelope with minimum power consumption and maximum braking power.

  • Well suited for use in forklift trucks
  • Internally a compact electromagnetic single-disc brake activates the actual main drum brake
  • Braking impulse from the operator via the potentiometer brake pedal magnetizes by current a circular floating soft iron ring
  • Magnetic circuit is open and is only closed by an armature washer, which rotates while the soft iron ring is swivel-mounted
  • During braking process, it rubs against the armature washer, which it constantly touches during freewheeling as well
  • Friction lining at center of U-section maintains the coefficient of friction of the electromagnetic brake
  • Retention force that develops between the magnet and the armature washer can be controlled by regulating the current flowing through it
  • Magnet ring can rotate both clockwise and anti-clockwise through a fixed arc
  • Two actuating cams mounted integrally absorb friction forces from magnet braking effect
  • Actuating cams apply friction in such a way that the two brake shoes are separated apart from each other, thus increasing their diameter and braking the drum
  • Increased braking current leads to more powerful action of brake and doubles self-energizing effect
  • Offers large amount of braking torque and remains energy efficient in the process because the braking effect is achieved with current
  • Symmetrical design of brake assembly applies braking forces equally in both directions of rotation of the wheel

  • Does not require readjustment of air gap clearance of brake shoes to the drum surface to accommodate lining wear as in a conventional drum brakes
  • Air gap between soft iron ring and rotating armature washer is effectively zero, which is ensured by low force compression springs
