Alcoa Wheels has completed a $21 million expansion on its facility in Barberton, OH which included building a state-of-the-art recycling facility that will help the company reduce the amount of energy and emissions it creates when recycling aluminum for production of new wheels.
The new facility can recycle aluminum from the machining plant located on the same Barberton campus to forge new aluminum wheels. According to the company, 100 million pounds of recycled scrap aluminum is enough to make two million new wheels.
With the new recycling capabilities, energy use and emissions are expected to be cut in half. Transportation costs have also been reduced due to the recycling facility being located on the same campus as an existing production facility. Transportation-related energy use has been reduced by almost 90%.
