Wasted Fuel: The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) estimates that 2 billion gallons of fuel are wasted each year, in the United States alone, due to low tire pressure. Increased Carbon Emissions: Vehicles with under inflated tires require addition fuel to overcome increased rolling resistance. In fact, the DOT estimates added emissions from low tire pressure equals over 57.5 billion pounds of carbon emissions emitted into the atmosphere every year, in the United States alone.

Prematurely Worn Tires: Running tires underinflated leads to premature failure as well as additional waste in landfills. The DOT and tire manufacturers estimate that on average, 43% of all tires in operation are operated at 10% below the recommended level leading to a 16% increase in wear rates. Similarly, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has found that over 7% of all commercial tires are running at least 20 psi under manufacturers’ recommended inflation pressures. Considering that in the USA alone, over 290 million tires are disposed of each year, it is estimated that nearly 100 million tires are worn and dumped prematurely. 

Roadside Pollution and Air Particulates: As under inflated tires begin to break down due to the added bend and flex caused by under inflation, tires become more susceptible to catastrophic failure and blowouts, resulting in the roadside tire debris, or “gators”, commonly seen on highways. Further, as the tires deteriorate, minute pieces of the tire’s rubber particulates are released into the air, causing particulate pollution. 

Lost Raw Materials: Tire makers use nonrenewable raw materials such as rubber and oil to create new tires. As tires are run with improper pressure, decreasing their lifespan, additional raw materials are required to make replacements. Further, commercial tires which are run under inflated tend to wear unevenly or have non repairable injuries, rendering them unviable for retreading.
