Hybrid Design Services, Inc. (HDS) will be introducing a graphene composite fin concept for advanced energy storage applications at The Battery Show.
HDS’ patent-pending graphene composite fin (GCF) concept aims to improve charge and discharge performance while minimizing packaging volume for liquid and air-cooled battery packs at a competitive price.
HDS’ GCF designs utilize structural layers, with bonded high-thermal conductivity graphene. This solution is similar to graphite and HOPG solutions, however, HDS’ graphene solution is thinner than HOPG and less expensive than either HOPG or graphite sheets. The aim is to improve cell thermal transfer without the need for expensive or complex liquid cooling systems. HDS’ current graphene materials are over 500 W/m-K, but R&D and production are aiming at greater than 750 W/m-K by Q4 of 2016.
Per HDS’ President, James Pinon, “The graphene cooling fin concept is very flexible. Even with our current production materials around 500 W/m-K, at any given thickness, our solutions are 30% to 50% more conductive than aluminum alone. In addition, we can adjust the base layers for stiffness, conductivity, mass, through-plane conductivity, and overall system cost to meet specific customer needs. Over the last year, HDS has been working to develop the designs and prototype parts for more testing.”
Since 2004, HDS has provided expert Engineering Services in the area of hybrid and electric vehicles and advanced energy storage systems (battery packs). Since then, the HDS team has put their expertise to work on many high profile hybrid and electric vehicle projects, battery pack and inverter designs, stationary power back-up systems, and robotic applications.
Besides its core engineering services, HDS is currently offering several product lines such as Smart Power Distribution Modules and High Voltage Sense Boards. HDS is also actively working on developing next-generation battery management systems and novel xEV vehicle architectures.
HDS will be showcasing the graphene composite fin concept and other HDS products at Booth 1404 at the Battery Show.
