SSAB is gearing up to transition its business to fossil-free steel production as part of its efforts to become totally fossil-free by 2045.
The company is currently studying conversion of a blast furnace into an electric arc furnace at one of its facilities as a first step in the transition process.
Conversion is expected to take place in 2025 and would cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 25%.
The company is transitioning its business as a consequence of its joint venture, HYBRIT, which aims to find a method for fossil-free steel production.
HYBRIT will replace current processes which use coal and coke with a hydrogen gas based process that emits water rather than carbon dioxide.
A pre-feasibility study conducted by SSAB and its joint venture partners has given the green light for a pilot plant to be built in Northern Sweden.
