FPT Engines Compliant with EN 15940 Standard for Paraffinic Diesel Fuels

FPT Industrial is announces that its NEF and Cursor (Euro VI Step C) engines are now compatible with paraffinic fuel according to EN 15940 specifications. 

This new European Standard calls for cleaner-burning paraffinic diesel fuels that can be synthetically created from feedstocks such as natural gas (GTL), biomass (BTL) or coal (CTL); or through hydro-treatment of vegetable oils (HVO). The main benefit of using paraffinic fuel is its environmental sustainability in terms of renewable energy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. It can be used either as a substitute to the standard diesel (EN 590 or ASTM D975) or blended into diesel fuel without any limit or labeling needed at retail pumps. 

FPT Industrial's NEF and Cursor (Euro VI Step C) engines are compatible with paraffinic fuels which fulfill the EN 15940 specifications without any negative impact on the engine’s lifetime, service intervals and durability, neither in the performance nor on the ATS (Aftertreatment System), including the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). Cursor engineCursor engine

Paraffinic fuels are ideal for reducing engine emissions compared to conventional diesel, as they contain virtually no sulphur or aromatic compounds and enable more efficient combustion (they have a high cetane number). HVO is a new way of producing very high-quality renewable bio-based diesel fuels via dedicated synthesis processes, ensuring significant greenhouse gas savings, without compromising engines, exhaust aftertreatment devices, or exhaust emissions. Meeting the EN 15940 specifications is mandatory for paraffinic fuels that will be used in diesel engines, as a guarantor of the required fuel technical properties.

Paraffinic diesel fuel is fully compatible with the existing distribution infrastructure, owing both to its storage stability and its similarities to standard diesel. In addition it can be blended with conventional diesel, including winter-grade fuels, in different percentages, preserving diesel fuel’s high quality properties.

The new European Standard EN 15940 has strengthened cooperation between fuel producers, manufacturers and other stakeholders, as they have reached a consensus on specifications for the new generation of cleaner diesel fuel to be used for transportation.
