Irwin Car and Equipment, a 128 year-old manufacturer of custom, heavy-duty rail-based and rubber-tired material handling equipment, is in the final stage of completing a capital expansion project at its Blairsville, PA location. The company has enlarged its manufacturing space from 26,000 sq. ft. to 40,000 sq. ft. so it can handle the dramatically increased volume of work from its Locomotive Group and its Mine and Tunneling Supply business unit. These two business units produce locomotives, personnel carriers and jeeps for the mining and tunneling industries, as well as belt winders, belt tensioners, mobile mine ventilation equipment and rock dusters. Irwin’s Blairsville facility also performs support work for Irwin’s main shop where its specialty mine cars, industrial cars, trailers and transporters are produced.
“This investment demonstrates the market’s ongoing confidence in our technical expertise, product quality and customer service,” says Bill Baker, President and CEO of Irwin Car and Equipment. “As our customer base continues to expand across all of our business units, we will be in a stronger position to meeting its growing variety of needs, and to capitalize on the opportunities we are presented.”
