Oerlikon’s Drive Systems Segment, with its brand Oerlikon Graziano, will display its latest innovative Shifting Solutions for the commercial vehicles and construction equipment market at bauma 2016, which takes place in Munich, Germany, from April 11–17, 2016. In the competitive commercial vehicles market, loader backhoe and telehandler market, the synchronizer of choice for the major OEMs is the Oerlikon Graziano high-torque strut type, which offers reduced shift effort and faster shift time, giving drivers greater vehicle control and improved productivity. Modular by design and available in single cone 153 or single-double cone 168-162/170 designation, the synchronizer can be specified with a range of friction material options for optimized performance, as determined by individual transmission requirements. The heavy-duty strut-type synchronizers can also provide an upgrade from traditional, less-efficient, pin-type units.

“bauma 2016 is a key opportunity to showcase our technology capability to the commercial vehicle and construction industries, where our expanding range of strut-type synchronizers are already established as a popular choice for high-torque, on-highway and off-highway applications,” comments Gunnar Stein, Chief Technology Officer, Oerlikon’s Drive Systems Segment. “The breadth of proven benefits delivered by Oerlikon Graziano strut-type synchronizers is synonymous with our drive to improve powertrain durability, efficiency and performance, and is supported by a bespoke design, validation and test service that can reduce costs and shorten development time.”

The full design, validation and test service that the company offers to complement its heavy-duty synchronizer range has been developed to help vehicle and transmission manufacturers overcome the limited availability of resources and engineering time traditionally associated with advanced synchronizer development. Customers using the service are able to reduce the cost of synchronizer upgrades, making a premium technology like the strut-type Oerlikon Graziano synchronizer more accessible.

A recent premium customer test program on a backhoe loader vehicle resulted in downshift synchronization four times faster from third to second gear, and more than five times faster from second to first, when compared to a previous, pin-type set-up. Gear engagement effort was also reduced by 50%, helped by a larger functioning tooth diameter (increased to Ø108 mm from Ø74 mm) and optimized chamfering angles. The same proportional reduction in effort was found during stationary engagement of first gear in cold conditions.

Technical highlights from Oerlikon Graziano include also the company’s patented long-life synchronizer with increased durability, a wide range of powershift clutch solutions and the servo-synchronizer concept. Aimed at the truck and off-highway sectors, the servo-synchronizer uses self-energizing principles to deliver up to higher performance and lower drag torque than an equally sized double cone system of conventional design.

Orelikon will be located at c/o Hall A5 – Booth 149.
