Transmission specialist Oerlikon Graziano, a brand of Oerlikon Drive Systems Segment, will present a selection of its most recent high technology transmissions and drivelines at the CTI Symposium in Suzhou. The company will be at Kempinski Hotel, Suzhou, Grand Ballroom, Stand 11, from September 18 to 19. Technical highlights will include 4SED, the company’s 4-speed twin-motor seamless shift electric transmission and the AVTR, the new 2 Speed Automated Manual Transmission full electric for AWD city cars or pure Electric Vehicles.
For several years Oerlikon Graziano has studied, developed and produced new solutions for a market that is increasingly demanding a more efficient energy use and emission reduction. “Our participation to CTI Suzhou will be the occasion to meet current and new customers, reinforcing the presence of our products in the Chinese market,” says Michele De Gruttola, Oerlikon Graziano Head of Sales and Business Development Business Unit Performance Automotive.
The 4SED uses two traction motors in a very compact powertrain which provides four speeds to allow running closer to peak efficiency – approximately 90%. The result is an overall efficiency improvement of up to 15%, which translates into increased range or improved performance for the vehicle. The transmission’s unique configuration uses two input shafts, each driven by its own electric motor. The two motors replace the twin clutches and the synchronizers, allow pre-selection of the next gear before the previous one has been disengaged, and can synchronize shaft speeds. The use of the traction motors also permits a reduced set of software algorithms compared to a normal automated gearbox, and since there are no hydraulics, there is no need for valve control.

The technology is scalable to suit a wide range of different vehicle types, urban electric cars, high performance cars, hybrid 4WD applications, electric buses and trucks. It is also suitable for applications with 48V motors, allowing significant cost savings and reducing risks of high voltage. A demonstrator has been fitted to an electric Mercedes Vito minibus and is currently touring renowned vehicle manufacturers to showcase its unique features. Customer feedback is very positive:

  • “As a first demonstrator the shifting function is very impressive, there is no feeling of torque interruption and they are very smooth.”
  • “This transmission is perfectly scalable to the needs of the customer through different platforms and performance requirements.”

The other Oerlikon Graziano’s innovative technology on show is the new 2 Speed Automated Manual Transmission. Developed in a EU-funded research project (FP7), called AVTR (Adaptable Voltage & Trasmission Ratio), it is a full electric transmission for AWD city cars or pure Electric Vehicles. The 2 speed AMT offers different solutions for EV market. Used singularly it provides the advantages of multispeed transmissions to pure electric vehicles, while applied as two independent axles it makes the vehicle AWD and at the same time allows seamless shifting.
