Cummins showcases EPA 2010 engines for motorcoaches

Propane-fueled lawn mowers cut carbon monoxide emissions by 80%

Cummins ISX11.9 and ISL9 engines provide a power range that is well suited for motorcoach applications, and they are certified to meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (ARB) 2010 emissions regulations while delivering better performance and better reliability. Cummins is the only engine manufacturer to design, develop, manufacture and support every component from the air intake to the exhaust aftertreatment in a totally integrated solution, including Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment technology, to meet the near-zero emissions standards.

Cummins fully integrated system enables the ISX11.9 and ISL9 to meet the needs of luxury motorcoaches and commuter/transit shuttles.

The ISX11.9 builds upon the legacy of strength and performance of the Cummins ISM engine and the proven technology of the ISX15. The 11.9-liter engine offers optimal horsepower and torque to handle the performance demands of luxury motorcoaches. Cummins ISL9 leverages the experience of the proven ISL engine and includes few changes to the base engine to meet EPA 2010 emission regulations. The power output of the ISL9 is an excellent match for the specific needs of commuter/transit coaches, with up to 380 hp (283 kW) and 1300 lb-ft (1763 Nm) of torque.

The ISX11.9 and ISL9 incorporate cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), a single VGT Turbocharger, a common Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the Cummins Aftertreatment System with SCR. Additionally, the XPI fuel system, which is capable of multiple injection events per cycle at ultra-high injection pressures, provides superior performance and driveability for motorcoach operators.

"Cummins understands that motorcoach customers need engines that provide superior driveability while achieving better reliability," said Tom Hodek, Cummins General Manager - Worldwide Bus Business. "Beginning with our 2010 product development, Cummins has tested and validated our engines in more than 200 vehicles in on-highway applications and amassed over 8 million miles of real-world experience. As a result of the extensive testing we employed prior to production, motorcoach customers are realizing the wide array of benefits our products offer," added Hodek.

Since full production of engines commenced in January 2010, Cummins has produced and shipped over 62,000 EPA 2010-certified engines from its manufacturing facilities in Jamestown, NY; Rocky Mount, NC; and Columbus, IN, through the end of December 2010.
