Perkins gave its 400F Series engine range its second European showing at this year’s INTERMAT. This latest incarnation of the popular 400 Series meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IIIB regulations which come into force in January 2013 in North America above 19 kW (25 hp) and in the EU above 37 kW (49.5 hp).

On display were two models – the 404F-22 and the 403F-15T. The four cylinder, 2.2 liter model is naturally-aspirated and produces 36.4 kW (48.8 hp) at 3,000 rpm and 143 Nm of torque at 1,800 rpm. The smaller three cylinder, 1.5 liter version is turbocharged and puts out 27 kW (36.2 hp) at 2,800 rpm and 112 Nm of torque at 1,800 rpm.

With its compact power the new 400F range really gets to grips with the challenges facing today’s construction OEMs. As they look to build small, high performance yet cost effective machines, the 400F range, which peaks at 45.5 kW (61 hp), is a very strong contender. The design flexibility of the engine’s Electronic Control Module can be used to provide a custom solution to a machine requirement thereby increasing the 400F’s capability across applications.

The 400 Series offers a seamless choice for equipment manufacturers for their own model range development, while the transition from the current emissions legislation to Tier 4 Final/Stage IIIB has been made easy for customers with a 97% carry over of components from the previous Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIA engine.

The only addition that manufacturers will see is the aftertreatment which has been designed to be as compact as possible, with flexible mounting arrangements to ease installation.

The new 400F range delivers improvements in fuel consumption, which minimizes running costs, and heat rejection, giving improved ambient clearance. This maintains the compact engine installation dimensions so necessary in this market.

Operators and owners will notice the improved transient response and appreciate the easy maintenance and serviceability and reduced oil consumption.

With the break in emissions legislation at 37 kW (49.5 hp) in Europe the Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIA 400D engine remains a popular choice for sub 37 kW (49.5 hp) applications. The optional eGovernor increases performance, transient response and specific fuel consumption (SFC), thereby improving overall machine capability at an acceptable cost.

Dean Lakey, Perkins 400 Series product manager, comments: “The 400F promises to continue the success story for this compact range of engines. We use the term ‘world engine’ for the 400 Series because its versatility is truly global. Essentially the core is unchanged from Tier 0/Stage I to Tier 4 Final/Stage IIIB and yet it can work in all these regulated territories with the addition of specific components.”
