The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced 13 new research projects which will receive $30 million in funding to develop new natural gas vehicle technologies. Funding is provided through the DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).
Entitled Methane Opportunities for Vehicular Energy (MOVE), the program's goal is to develop light-weight, affordable natural gas tanks and natural gas compressors that can efficiently fuel a natural gas vehicle at home.
Current natural gas vehicles use tanks that can handle high pressures and are often cumberson and too large or too expensive to be suitable for all vehicles. To overcome this issue, REL Inc. will receive funding through the ARPA-E program to develop an internal "foam core" for natural gas tanks that enables the tank to be formed in any shape and have a higher storage capacity.
