President Obama announced the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be working together to develop new fuel economy standards for trucks by March 2015. The goal of the new regulations is to further reduce carbon emissions produced by heavy-duty trucks.
The President said during the announcement that the new regulations would not only help reduce carbon pollution, but also reduce businesses' fuel costs which would lead to lower prices for customers.
According to the White House, the DOT and EPA will work closely with truck manufacturers as they begin to draft the new regulations.
