Solectrac Founder and CEO Steve Heckeroth developed the company's electric tractor to find an alternative to using fossil fuels. He says tractors are an ideal electric vehicle because they need weight to ensure traction. Batteries are heavy, therefore using them as a power source can provide weight for traction as well as cleaner operation.
Electric motors used to help power the tractor also offer maximum torque through all the low operating speeds of the tractors. The electric motors are also very efficient at these low speeds, further indicating the benefits of electrification in this application.
