HAMM, the roller manufacturer, has come up with a host of innovations for bauma 2016: the DV+ Series pivot-steered tandem rollers are the highlight for asphalt paving construction. They utilize the new, easy-to-learn Easy Drive operating concept that is being presented in detail at bauma. The HD+ Series tandem rollers and H Series compactors will also be equipped with Easy Drive in the future – attendees can get a good look at the first models in Munich. For the earth-moving sector, the compaction specialists are presenting the ultra-small H 5i and H 7i compactors. The extensive package of innovations is rounded off with the 3000 Series: the classic earth-moving machines have been updated in some areas to meet the specific requirements of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. In the rubber-wheeled rollers segment, there is a real bauma newcomer: the GRW 180i with a maximum weight of 18 t. HAMM also features some innovations for the measurement and documentation technology area because WITOS HCQ will allow data to be transferred directly from and to rollers in real time.
The tasks to be carried out in road construction and earth-moving are becoming ever more complex. At the same time, different climatic zones, locally proven construction methods and materials, as well as legislation are resulting in marked regional differentiation in requirements. HAMM is ready for this challenge and is presenting the industry with an extremely diverse product program tailored to the specific characteristics of the regional markets all around the world. Wherever in the world they may be, customers can rest assured: HAMM always has the right compaction technology. DV+ Series tandem rollers: the premium class for asphalt compaction
The DV+ Series tandem rollers from HAMM are trendsetters in the asphalt segment in every respect. All variants of the pivot-steered 7-9 t rollers will be on show at bauma 2016: with double vibration (VV), a vibration and an oscillation drum (VO) and as a combi roller (VT). All models offer a fully glazed panoramic cab with optimum visibility. The driver has a good overview of the drum edges, the edge pressing and cutting assembly and the construction site at all times. In addition, viewing panes in the cab floor ensure that the driver can see the rollers or wheels throughout, and in the cab, the Easy Drive operating concept provides top-class ergonomics and comfort.
With their modern engines (DV+ 90i: 75 kW, Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB and DV+ 70i: 54.6 kW, Tier 4/Stage IIIB) and highly effective diesel particulate filters (DPFs), the new rollers satisfy the stringent exhaust gas requirements of the most restrictive markets in Europe and North America. The large water and diesel tanks enable high productivity over long work intervals. The filling process is extremely user friendly, thanks especially to a safe and very fast water-filling system that operates from ground level via a pressurized supply as standard.
The machine technology employed ensures the highest compaction quality. The reasons are diverse. To begin with, the DV+ operates with split vibration drums as standard. In addition, its pivot steering with large turning angles and enormous track offset provides for extremely sensitive steering in four different steering modes. This is complemented by an even and constant weight distribution as well as the automatic transmission for gentle acceleration and braking. The synergy between these characteristics results in the smoothest possible asphalt layers – even in tight curves.
Easy Drive operating concept: now available in three machine series
To provide for modern, easy-to-learn and continually safe operation of the rollers, HAMM has developed the new “Easy Drive” operating concept. It aids the driver with self-explanatory, logical user guidance.
Easy Drive was first realized in the DV+ Series tandem rollers and will be gradually introduced in the HD+ Series tandem rollers and the H Series compactors, as well. Its principal components are the clearly arranged instrument panel with steering wheel and a multifunction armrest with joystick and pushbutton switches. They are used to access the main functions. The Easy Drive system also includes a fully adjustable seat. Just like the steering column with the instrument panel, it can be individually adjusted so that drivers can quickly find a healthy and ergonomically sound sitting position, whatever their physique.
Another special feature of Easy Drive is its operating structure. A steering wheel is used for steering. All other important functions are operated via a joystick and the multifunction armrest. Here, the driver is able to see all the keys on the joystick. The operating elements are arranged around the joystick in such a way that the most frequently used ones are placed closest to it. The operation is designed to be entirely language-neutral. HAMM uses color coding to achieve unambiguous assignment of the elements and a clear overview.
The Easy Drive operating concept was awarded the coveted iF design award 2015 for excellent product design in the “Automobiles / Vehicles / Bikes” category. This internationally renowned design prize takes into account a number of aspects including the degree of innovation, selection of materials, functionality and ergonomics. Visitors to bauma 2016 can experience the ease of operation for themselves in a number of exhibits and a separate simulator – the roller drivers who are already working with Easy Drive are enthusiastic about it in any case.
H CompactLine Series compactors: compact earth-moving professionals
As for the earth-moving sector, HAMM is bringing along the ultra-small H 5i (4.8 t) and H 7i (6.3 t) compactors from the H CompactLine to Munich. The specially designed series of compact machines satisfies the requirements in all areas by a wide margin. Powering the rollers is a Kubota engine with 54.6 kW output complying with Tier 4/Stage IIIB.
A great deal of innovation has gone into the drive. The wheels are driven by wheel motors, with a special drive system distributing the torque to the front or rear axle, as required. This gives the compactors an exceptionally good climbing ability and generous ground clearance. The machines are also remarkably short, especially the H 7i: measuring approximately 4.40 m, it is the world’s shortest compactor in this weight class. The combination of compact design, three-point center pivot assembly and short wheel base delivers very good driving and handling characteristics. This makes the compactors ideally suited for narrow and steep construction sites.
Like all HAMM machines, the compact rollers are also extremely simple to operate and offer ergonomically optimized driving positions with outstanding visibility. Every manual operation is apparent from the arrangement of the operating elements and the layout of the driver’s cab. In addition, drivers can easily adjust the seat to their own weight and size.
Their ease of operation makes the rollers perfect rental machines because drivers can soon operate the small compactors correctly and do a good job without the need for extended training. That helps to promote safety. The clear operating concept is complemented by important and useful options for the rental business such as a telematics interface, an electronic battery isolating switch, the automatic engine stop system, padfoot segments, blade, special combiscrapers and a version with a VIO drum.
GRW 180i rubber-wheeled rollers: new in the class up to 18 t
HAMM also has something new in store in the rubber-wheeled roller sector: the GRW 180i. Its dimensions and technical realization is identical to the GRW 280i. The difference lies in the engine: the new models are powered by a 3.6 l turbo-diesel from Deutz with a DOC system. It delivers 55.4 kW and stays below the limits for Tier 4/Stage IIIB. The GRW 180i will be available in two versions: the GRW 180i-10 (10 t basic weight) and the GRW 180i-12H (12 t basic weight). Both models can be ballasted up to 18 t.
A new feature is the extended variable ballast concept, also available for the GRW 280i “big brothers.” The ballast space can be loaded and unloaded with ease. HAMM supplies prefabricated weights, as well as specially shaped containers for this purpose which users can fill with loose materials. This enables each roller to be set up precisely for the asphalt type, layer thickness and application.
The 3000 Series compactors: tried and tested classics remain part of the program
The 3000 Series is a classic among compactors. This series continues to attract tremendous interest all over the world. It is hardly surprising since the rollers are simple to operate and extremely versatile, have a high compaction power, enormous climbing ability and offer outstanding driving and handling characteristics thanks to the three-point center pivot assembly.
With this series, HAMM is aiming first and foremost at customers in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and South America. The available options reflect the requirements of these markets. They include a compactometer, a canopy and a fuel prefilter. A wide range of lighting, tire and comfort versions are also available. Depending on the model, the engines of the compactors with operating weights of 10 t or more comply with the requirements of Tier 2/Stage II or Tier 3/Stage IIIA. The Tier 2 models 3410 (10.7 t) and 3411 (11.4 t) in particular have been slightly modified. From now on, they will offer more comfort and safety features than before in the standard version and be able to compact at full power in ambient temperatures of up to 50 C thanks to a modified cooling concept.
WITOS HCQ: optimized process for compaction monitoring
WITOS HCQ is a useful complement to the HCQ Navigator, HAMM’s versatile measurement and documentation system for compaction. In the basic version, the satellite-based system gathers all important compaction parameters and the progress of individual or multiple rollers during compaction. For this purpose, the HCQ Navigator generates a real-time “compaction map” allowing the areas which have already been adequately compacted and those which require further compaction to be identified at a glance. This enables the roller drivers to compact extremely efficiently and evenly.
The HCQ Navigator records the data during the process. Previously, this data would have been transferred on a USB stick to an office PC for data backup at the end of a day or project section. With WITOS HCQ, this process step will in future be carried out via an online tool. This means that, in theory, the data is available anywhere in the world – even during compaction. What is especially interesting for projects in the USA: HAMM’s WITOS HCQ features the option of exporting the data in real time for the VETA analysis software.
The data can also be transferred in the opposite direction: planners can prepare construction site data offline and supply it via WITOS HCQ. Moreover, the software is very easy to use. For example, the developers at HAMM took care to ensure that the most important functions can be called up with a single click. The advantages are obvious: there is no more need to use any USB sticks, while the data transfer becomes faster and more secure thanks to WITOS HCQ.
WITOS HCQ uses state-of-the-art mobile phone technology for data communication. An impact and vibration-protected SIM card is mounted in the panel PC for this purpose. The user concludes a mobile phone contract for the card through HAMM. The data transfer then takes place via the WITOS portal of the Wirtgen Group. Care has also been taken to ensure data security: the server used for the communication is located in Germany and the data is professionally secured there.
