New Funding Available from the DOE for Development of Lightweight Materials

The Obama administration has announced that $14.2 million in funding will be made available through the DOE for development of lightweight materials.

President Obama recently announced $14.2 million in funding will be made available for development of lightweight materials for advanced vehicles.

Funded through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the goal is to develop high-strength, lightweight carbon fiber composites and advanced steels and alloys to help improve fuel economy.

Research and development projects across three major areas will be eligible for funding:

  • Predictive modeling of carbon fiber composites
  • Predictive modeling of advanced steels
  • Advanced alloy development for automotive and heavy-duty engines
