Mid-September 2011 saw the acquisition by GKN of Stromag Holding GmbH (Stromag), which is headquartered in Unna, Germany, and has production facilities in France, the USA, Brazil, India and China. All business units will be integrated into the GKN Land Systems Division.

Stromag is one of the world's leading enterprises in the field of development and production of mechanical drive systems. The company primarily supplies technology for the production of wind turbines, transmissions, diesel engines and electric motors, as well as for off-highway applications and agritechnical engineering.

Its core competence in hydraulic clutches and innovative disk systems makes the company a globally acknowledged engineering partner for transmission manufacturers.

With its modular systems for electromagnetically operated, spring-actuated brakes with a wide range of options, Stromag is a specialist when it comes to the production of customer-specific series and modular solutions for marine, offshore, crane, wind turbine and logistics applications.

Specialist for agritechnical drives

Leading agritechnical manufacturers, for example, opt for components from Stromag. They are characterized by high power density, very small installation spaces and include hydraulic multi-disk clutches and brakes, electromagnetic pole-face friction clutches, spring-actuated brakes and flexible couplings.

Growth in old and new segments

By making this latest acquisition, GKN is pursuing its strategic goal of expanding the GKN Land Systems Division into a globally leading technology partner in the core segments of off-highway applications. The production locations and the engineering expertise will create major synergistic effects within the GKN Land Systems group.

In particular, the range of Stromag products and services will enable GKN Land Systems to strengthen its activities on the markets for energy management and significantly expand its presence in the construction and mining industries, as well as agritechnical engineering and other industrial market segments.

"The acquisition of Stromag is an important step towards implementing the GKN Land Systems strategy of gaining a globally leading position in the field of industrial energy management. Especially in combination with our current business, it will give us a strong platform for accelerating growth on the existing markets. In addition to which, we will gain access to attractive, new segments," says Dr. Thomas Röthig, Managing Director at GKN Land Systems.

"Above all, Stromag's innovative clutch technologies are the ideal complement to our service and product portfolio, for example. As a result, we can supply complete solutions from a single source, such as for drivelines, that are characterised by high performance and innovative components."
