Virtual Reality Safety Testbed for Construction Sites

Researchers in Germany are studying the use of virtual reality for training and the prevention of accidents on construction sites.

Researchers at Rhur-University Bochum in Germany are currently investigating the possibility of interactive training courses using VR to increase safety on construction sites. Their goal is to have workers experience the various hazards they would encounter on a job site in order to sensitize them and ultimately prevent accidents from occurring.

With information provided via digital modeling, especially Building Information Modeling (BIM) it is possible to review construction sites early in the planning process. Therefore, the researchers believe it is possible to prevent safety accidents in a digital environment, even before the actual construction site is physically available.
