Komatsu introduces Tier 4 Final hydraulic excavator

Komatsu's new Tier 4 Final PC88MR-10 hydraulic excavator offers improved efficiency and lower fuel consumption.

Pc88 Mr 10

Komatsu America Corp. introduces the PC88MR-10 hydraulic excavator. With a net 65.5 hp (48.8 kW), the PC88MR-10 is powered by a four-valve per cylinder Komatsu SAA4D95LE-6 engine and is EPA Tier 4 Final emission certified.

Komatsu’s Tier 4 Final engines are built on a solid foundation that started in 1996 with the introduction of Komatsu’s Tier 1 engines. The resulting benefit today is a Tier 4 Final engine that is productive, dependable and efficient. This new excavator leverages Komatsu’s leadership in technology and innovation by delivering an environmentally-friendly engine that provides high levels of performance while reducing fuel consumption and operating costs.

With an operating weight between 18,739 lbs. (8500 kg) and 19,290 lbs. (8750 kg), the PC88MR-10 tight-tail excavator features improved efficiency, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhanced serviceability. This compact excavator bridges the gap between compact and construction sized excavators for contractors working in a wide variety of construction, utility and landscaping applications.

The PC88MR-10 is equipped with the latest KOMTRAX remote monitoring technology with data access via the web or via KOMTRAX Mobile on your smart phone. In addition to providing data such as fuel levels, operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts, KOMTRAX has been further enhanced with a new Operator Identification System which reports key operating information for multiple operators. A new Auto Idle Shutdown function helps improve operating costs by reducing unnecessary idle time.

Special features of the new PC88MR-10 include:

Komatsu EPA Tier 4 Final Emission Certified Engine – Productive, Dependable, Efficient

Komatsu’s EPA Tier 4 Final engines are built on the strength of its proven Tier 4 Interim foundation that integrates a Variable Flow Turbocharger (VFT), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a Komatsu Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (KDOC). The KDOC is a simple 100% passive regeneration system that does not require AdBlue/DEF injection or a diesel particulate filter. The Komatsu EPA Tier 4 Final engine uses an advanced electronic control system to manage the air-flow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters, and after treatment functions to optimize performance, reduce emissions, and provide advanced diagnostic capability. The result is up to 4% lower fuel consumption with no loss of performance. To ensure product reliability and durability in demanding conditions, Komatsu developed the entire system, including the control software. This control system is also integrated into the machine’s on-board diagnostics systems and KOMTRAX, Komatsu’s standard telematics system.

Performance

The PC88MR-10 features a maximum digging depth of 15 ft. 2 in. (4,615 mm) and a maximum reach of 23 ft. 5 in. (7,150 mm).  A “swing boom” allows the PC88MR-10 to work in confined spaces so the operator can focus on the work in front and worry less about rear swing impact in confined areas. It accomplishes these tasks while maintaining its high lifting capacity and stability.

The standard auxiliary hydraulic system flow of 33 gpm (125 l/min) can be easily changed from single direction flow to bi-directional flow to provide excellent hydraulic attachment productivity. Standard equipment includes a bucket thumb-mounting bracket, auxiliary piping for attachments and a 7 ft. 7 in. (2,330 mm) blade that is standard with an available power angle blade option.

There are six working modes to match hydraulic power to the job, thereby further increasing fuel economy. A new enhanced attachment control allows up to 10 attachments to be stored in the monitor panel and two-way attachments can also be operated in Economy Mode. An “Eco Guidance” function helps increase fuel efficient operation.  The PC88MR-10 offers the choice of rubber track, steel grouser systems or the Komatsu Road-Liner track system.

Enhanced comfort and ease of operation

The ROPS-certified cab specifically designed for hydraulic excavators gains strength from a reinforced box structure framework. The cab is mounted on viscous isolation dampers that provide low vibration levels. A heated high back seat with new fully adjustable armrests improves comfort.  In addition to the standard radio, there is an auxiliary input for connecting external devices is provided to play music through the cab stereo speakers. Additionally there are two 12V power ports incorporated into the cab and a seat base mounted auxiliary engine shut off switch. Optional joysticks are available with proportional controls for operating attachments.

A high resolution 7 in. LCD monitor features enhanced capabilities.  The operator can easily select up to six working modes to match machine performance to the application. The monitor panel provides information on Eco guidance, operational records, fuel consumption history, and utilization information.  A standard rearview camera with wide landscape view allows the operator to view directly behind the machine.

The PC88MR-10 is equipped with an easy to access standard control pattern change valve so the operator can choose either “backhoe” style or ISO style controls to match personal preference.

Convenient Maintenance and Serviceability

To simplify maintenance, a wide opening engine hood and new larger left side service door improve service access to key daily checks. Increased capacity V-fin type side-by-side radiator and oil cooler modules simplify maintenance and have improved cooling capability. The X- frame car body design provides great strength and helps prevent mud and debris build-up, saving the operator valuable time when cleaning the machine.

The excavator is equipped with the exclusive Komatsu EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System), which performs three main functions, displayed on the large LCD color monitor. EMMS continually monitors all critical excavator systems, alerting and guiding the operator should an abnormality occur, to help keep a small problem from becoming a larger service issue.

DT-type electronic connectors seal against dirt and moisture. Hydraulic hoses are equipped with O-ring seals instead of conventional taper seals to help prevent leaks. Extended replacement intervals for hydraulic oil, engine oil, and filters keep the machine up and running for increased hours on the job. New battery master disconnect and seat base mounted engine shutdown switches have been added.

All Komatsu Tier 4 machines come with Komatsu CARE. Komatsu CARE provides complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three (3) years or 2,000 hours (whichever occurs first.) It also includes a 50-point inspection at each service.
