Komatsu launches Tier 4 Final PC490LC-11 hydraulic excavator

The new Tier 4 Final Komatsu PC490LC-11 hydraulic excavator offers a net 359 hp rating and a 7% reduction in fuel consumption.

Pc490 Lc 11

Komatsu America Corp. introduces the PC490LC-11 hydraulic excavator. With a net 359 hp (268 kW), the PC490LC-11 is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D125E-7 engine which is EPA Tier 4 Final emissions certified. Komatsu’s Tier 4 Final engines are built on a solid foundation that started in 1996 with the introduction of Komatsu’s Tier 1 engines. The resulting benefit today is a Tier 4 Final engine that is productive, dependable and efficient. This new PC490LC-11 leverages Komatsu’s leadership in technology and innovation by delivering a more environmentally friendly engine that provides high levels of performance while reducing fuel consumption up to 7%.

With an operating rate between 105,670 lbs. (47,930 kg) and 110,220 lbs. (49,995 kg), the PC490LC-11 maintains the powerful lifting performance capability and stability of the previous model, with improved fuel efficiency, an upgraded cab design, and enhanced serviceability to maximize productivity while lowering operating costs.

The PC490LC-11 is equipped with the latest KOMTRAX remote monitoring technology with data access via the web or via KOMTRAX Mobile on your smart phone. In addition to providing data such as fuel levels, operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts, KOMTRAX has been further enhanced to monitor AdBlue/DEF levels, ambient air temperatures and pressures. A new Operator Identification System reports key operating information for multiple operators.  A new Auto Idle Shutdown function helps improve operating costs by reducing unnecessary idle time.

Key features of the PC490LC-11 include:

Komatsu EPA Tier 4 Final Emission Certified Engine – Productive, Dependable, Efficient

Komatsu’s EPA Tier 4 Final engines are built on the strength of its proven Tier 4 Interim foundation. By integrating Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR), the Tier 4 Final engine further reduces NOx emissions using AdBlue/DEF. The Komatsu Tier 4 Final engine uses an advanced electronic control system to manage the air-flow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters, and after treatment functions to optimize performance, reduce emissions, and provide advanced diagnostic capability. The result is lower fuel consumption with no loss of performance. Komatsu continues to use a Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT) and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve for more precise temperature and air management control as well as longer component life.

To ensure product reliability and durability in demanding conditions, Komatsu developed the entire system, including the control software which is critical to the effective operation of the aftertreatment system. This control system is also integrated into the machine’s on-board diagnostics systems and KOMTRAX, Komatsu’s standard telematics system.

Lift Capacity and Stability

The PC490LC-11 continues to feature a heavy-duty undercarriage and counterweight to maintain the same high lift capacity and lateral stability as the prior series. The operator can easily select Lift Mode, which raises hydraulic pressure to increase lifting force up to 7%. Along with the high lift capacity, other reinforced components are maintained such as strengthened undercarriage components, a reinforced revolving frame, and a high capacity swing bearing. A variable track gauge option significantly increases lateral stability and lift capacity up to an additional 10%.

Highly Efficient Hydraulic System

All major components on the new PC490LC-11 including the engine, hydraulic pumps, motors, and valves are exclusively designed and produced by Komatsu. This integrated design uses a closed center load sensing hydraulic system that takes hydraulic efficiency to the next level using variable speed matching technology. Variable speed matching allows the engine speed to adjust based on the hydraulic pump output for both light and heavy-duty applications.

Additional enhancements have been made within the hydraulic system to reduce hydraulic loss, resulting in better efficiency. A hydraulically driven reversible cooling fan varies fan speed in response to coolant, hydraulic oil, and ambient air temperatures, resulting in better efficiency and a quiet work environment for the operator.

Operator Environment

The PC490LC-11 cab provides a comfortable and quiet work environment to help operators maximize productivity. The ROPS certified cab, specifically designed for hydraulic excavators, gains strength from a reinforced box structure framework. The cab is mounted on viscous isolation dampers that provide low vibration levels. A standard air suspension high back seat with newly designed fully adjustable armrests is heated for improved comfort.  In addition to the standard radio, there is an auxiliary input for connecting external devices to play music through the cab speakers.  Moreover, there are two 12V power ports incorporated into the cab. Optional joysticks are available with proportional controls for operating attachments.

A high-resolution 7 in. LCD color monitor features enhanced capabilities and displays information in 25 languages for global support. The operator can easily select up to six working modes to match machine performance to the application. The monitor panel provides information on AdBlue/DEF fluid level, Eco guidance, operational records, fuel consumption history, and utilization information. A standard rearview camera with a wide landscape view allows the operator to view directly behind the machine. An optional second camera is available.

Convenient Maintenance and Serviceability

The PC490LC-11 provides easier service access to help reduce costly downtime. The new model has guardrails on both sides of the upper structure for easier accessibility. The hydraulically driven fan can be manually reversed to simplify cleaning out the cooling assembly. The radiator and hydraulic oil coolers are mounted side by side, making it easier to maintain and service when required.

The excavator is equipped with the exclusive Komatsu EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System), which has enhanced diagnostic features that give the operator and technicians greater monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities. EMMS also continuously monitors all critical systems, preventative maintenance, and provides trouble-shooting assistance to minimize diagnosis and repair time.

All Komatsu Tier 4 machines come with Komatsu CARE. Komatsu CARE provides complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three (3) years or 2,000 hours (whichever occurs first.) It also includes a 50-point inspection at each service and two complimentary KDPF exchanges in the first five (5) years.
