Detroit Diesel Corporation delivered its 100,000th DD platform engine to Southern Refrigerated Transport (SRT), a subsidiary of Covenant Transportation Group. The engine – a Detroit DD15 in a Freightliner Cascadia – was presented on January 19 at a special ceremony at Southern Refrigerated Transport’s Texarkana, AR headquarters.

Longtime customer Covenant Transportation Group, which in addition to SRT includes Star Transportation and Covenant Transport, is one of the largest truckload carriers in the United States. More than 70% of the company’s fleet is comprised of Freightliner tractors with Detroit engines.

“Our customers rely on Covenant to perform at the highest level of service every time, which is why we need our partners to deliver,” says David Hughes, senior vice president and corporate treasurer for Covenant Transportation Group. “Detroit engines help us achieve our service commitments at the highest of levels.”

Because Covenant Transportation Group is an EPA SmartWay partner, Hughes also noted that the DD15’s robust performance coupled with its excellent fuel efficiency is ideal for meeting the company’s pledge to decrease fuel consumption and emissions.

Adds Mark Lampert, senior vice president, sales and marketing for Daimler Trucks North America: “We are proud of our DD Platform of heavy-duty engines, and pleased that SRT and all of the Covenant Transportation Group companies have achieved excellent efficiency and performance with our engines.”

The DD heavy-duty engine family – which also includes the DD13 and DD16 – features enhanced technologies and operating efficiencies, resulting in powerful performance and excellent fuel economy. The production of the 100,000th engine was marked in late 2011 with a celebration at Detroit Diesel’s manufacturing facility.
