Ricardo has released initial test results from its CryoPower project which aims to reduce emissions and improve efficiency of internal combustion engines.
Its CryoPower concept is a split-cycle engine using liquid nitrogen for improved thermodynamic performance.
The combustion process delivers heat energy back to the chilled and compressed intake air.
Early test results have demonstrated low-NOx emissions capabilities.
Ricardo and its project partners say the engine concept is suited for applications including heavy-duty on- and off-highway vehicles.
