Pre-charge and permeation: Part 1

Bladder accumulators are preferred in mobile applications where rapid cycling, high fluid contamination and fast response times are required.

Bladder accumulators are preferred in mobile applications where rapid cycling, high fluid contamination and fast response times are required. They are used in a variety of hydraulic systems to optimize performance and to prolong equipment life by absorbing shock, maintaining pressure or providing backup power supply.

What most designers don’t account for is the inherent loss in pre-charge that occurs over time due to gas permeation through the bladder. Left unchecked, this pre-charge loss leads to poor performance and premature bladder failure.
