POSITAL Announces Multiturn Kit Encoders for Safety-Critical Applications

POSITAL has introduced two new modular kit encoders for safety-critical applications where multiturn measurement ranges are required. The new IXARC encoders are designed for use in equipment such as autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), forklifts and aerial work platforms.

The encoders operate using a pair of permanent magnets geared to turn at different rates. The rotary position of each magnet is monitored by a separate Hall-effect sensor and an embedded microcontroller combines the sensor outputs to calculate angular displacement and rotation count. This system provides a multiturn measurement range up to 35 revolutions and maintains an accurate rotation count even if rotations occur when system power is unavailable. This eliminates the need for backup batteries and reduces maintenance requirements.

The new modular kit encoders are available in two versions. A safety variant is available with a PLd certification to the EN13849 safety standard. A second variant is based on the same measurement principle and features redundant outputs that can be used to ensure fail-safe operation. For this version, machine builders can program their PLCs or controllers to compare the two position outputs and conduct plausibility checks to confirm the data is logically consistent. If a discrepancy is detected, motion can be stopped to avoid a safety hazard.

Both versions feature rugged, fiber-reinforced PBT housings and a shaftless design intended to fit around the rotating shaft of a host machine or motor. They support RS485 asynchronous communications.
