Caterpillar Inc. has opened the Black Hills Engineering Design Center, a 17,000-square-foot facility dedicated to transforming equipment development through virtual reality and advanced visualization.
Located in Rapid City, South Dakota, the center serves as a global hub for Caterpillar teams working on machines, engines, electrification and autonomy. The facility allows engineers to design, test and refine equipment without the immediate need for physical prototypes.
The center utilizes extended reality (XR) and digital prototypes to facilitate collaboration across global teams. By identifying potential issues early in the design phase, the company aims to accelerate development timelines and reduce the costs associated with physical builds.
The facility currently houses approximately 100 employees, with plans for growth. The workforce integrates traditional engineering with animation, design and data visualization to create digital models of upcoming equipment.
According to the company, the Rapid City team is critical to developing technologies that improve decision-making and delivery efficiency for customers. The investment also extends a long-standing partnership with the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, intended to support a pipeline for talent and technical innovation.
The opening of the Black Hills Engineering Design Center follows Caterpillar's broader strategy to integrate digital tools into its manufacturing and design processes, particularly as the industry shifts toward autonomous and electric solutions.
