Federal-Mogul Corporation has developed a piston ring coating, CarboGlide, that supports vehicle manufacturers' efforts to make gasoline engines more fuel efficient.
- Reduces ring friction by up to 20% compared to nitride or other commonly used coatings to improve fuel economy and CO2 emissions
- High wear resistance withstands engine's full operational life, even in high-output gasoline engines with turbocharging or direct injection
- High chemical and physical stability protects cylinder surface from scuffing and scoring, especially under critical lubrication conditions
- Composition includes multi-layer microstructure and carbon, deposited in diamond-like form, as well as hydrogen and tungsten
- Can produce coating thickness of 10 microns, more than three times that of industry's latest state-of-the-art DLC coating
- Is applied via process based on combination of Physical Vapour Deposition and Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition
- Multi-layer architecture together with surface machining and finishing ensures integrity of coating structure, optimal adhesion and high coating stability
- Highly stable due to non-metallic nature
- Combination of low friction, low wear and scuffing resistance allows for application in extreme conditions
