Komatsu Germany Mining Division (KGM) has announced the global launch of the PC9000-12, the largest hydraulic mining excavator in the company's current portfolio. Following an initial market introduction in Canada in 2025, the machine is now available worldwide through Komatsu’s global dealer network.
The PC9000-12 is engineered for large-scale surface mining operations, focusing on cycle time optimization and compatibility with high-capacity haulage fleets. It is designed to load mining trucks ranging from 240 to 400 short tons in a three- to five-pass match. With a payload capacity exceeding 80 tons per pass, the excavator can load a Komatsu 980E truck in five passes in under 150 seconds. Under optimal conditions, the machine is capable of production rates of approximately 8,000 tons per hour.
To accommodate varying regional emissions regulations and site-specific infrastructure, the PC9000-12 offers three powertrain configurations:
- Tier 4 diesel
- Unregulated diesel
- Electric drive
The excavator is available in both front shovel and backhoe configurations. The front shovel setup utilizes a 46-cubic-meter bucket, while the backhoe configuration is equipped with a 49-cubic-meter bucket.
The PC9000-12 is designed for integration with modern mine site technologies. It is compatible with Komatsu’s FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) and is engineered to support efficient double-side loading operations.
The operator cabin features advanced monitoring systems intended to improve situational awareness and visibility. According to the manufacturer, these systems and the ergonomically optimized cabin design are intended to reduce operator fatigue and support consistent performance throughout shifts.
The first PC9000-12 unit was delivered in May 2025 to an oilsands operation in Canada. That launch was supported by SMS Equipment, which served as the launch partner for the Canadian market. The global release marks the expansion of this model into all major mining regions worldwide.
"With its versatile configurations — including face shovel and backhoe, as well as diesel and electric drive options — we can efficiently serve all major mining operations worldwide," said Peter Buhles, vice president sales and service at KGM.
KGM, which specializes in ultra-large hydraulic mining excavators, stated that the PC9000-12 represents the latest evolution in its surface mining lineup, aimed at reducing the cost per ton for mining operators.
