While new home construction wasn't as high in December as it was in November, it was still up from December 2010.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, housing starts were down 4.1% from November, but the number of building permits was about the same in both months.
Analysts say that the amount of foreclosures on the market has been one aspect keeping new construction low. However, increased consumer confidence and a reduction in jobless claims over the past two months appears to show things could be heading in an upwards direction.
