As of February 29, 2012, Navistar International will no longer be able to to use emissions credits. These credits allowed the company to continue selling its current engine family even though it was not compliant with 2010 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements in California.
Navistar will now have to certify new engine models without the use of credits, which could delay production.
Any engines the company produces that is not EPA 2010-compliant will be subject to a $1,900 penalty from the EPA, per engine.
