Lexan EXL glass-filled polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer resin

SABIC Innovative Plastics puts a new spin on the traditional steering wheel with an injection-molded design featuring its Lexan EXL glass-filled polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer resin. 

• Typical steering wheels are comprised of die-cast magnesium or aluminum overmolded with flexible urethane foam; leaving no space for integration of electronic components
• Resin avoids environmental drawbacks of existing steering wheels; traditional materials can be difficult to recycle, involve potentially hazardous waste products from casting
• In two-piece design, space created by hollow rim and spokes enables integration of damping and sensing technology, switch housings, other functionality inside wheel
• New styling options such as special colors and effects
• Greater design flexibility to create new shapes and ergonomic configurations
• Simpler manufacturing by reducing the number of secondary processes
