Powertrain manufacturer FPT Industrial will present its latest range of solutions for the construction industry at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, held in Las Vegas, USA, on March 4 to 8, 2014.

A leader in industrial engines with a range that spans six families, FPT Industrial will showcase the latest addition to its range, the R22. Providing 33 to 52 kW and up to 250 Nm of torque, the compact and efficient three-cylinder, 2.2-liter engine has been developed with long-term partner VM Motori S.p.A. and furthers FPT Industrial’s offering into the low displacement construction sector.

The customizable R22, suitable for construction machinery such as skid steer loaders and mini excavators, features Common Rail fuel injection and a turbocharger with after-cooler and waste gate. The cost-effective solution has service intervals of up to 600 hours and meets Tier 4 Final/Stage IIIB emission regulations. Producing less than 56 kW, FPT Industrial has developed a maintenance-free aftertreatment solution to ensure it achieves the required emission levels. This solution adopts a combination of Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Partial Flow Filter (PFF), contained in an integrated converter.
The PFF oxidizes particulate matter (PM) that is regenerated passively by nitrogen dioxide (NO2) when the engine is operating at normal temperatures of over 240 C. However, if running at lower temperatures, unlike a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which is widely used in engines under 56 kW, a PFF will not clog with PM and avoids any backpressure increase. To ensure a perfect PM conversion in all conditions the filter has been combined with a unique engine management system designed by FPT Industrial’s Research & Development Centre in Turin, Italy.

Alongside the low displacement R22 engine, FPT Industrial will showcase its Tier 4 Interim N45 Industrial Power Unit (IPU), featuring a four-cylinder, 4.5-liter NEF 45 engine that produces up to 129 kW.

The six-cylinder 8.7-liter Cursor 9 engine in a Tier 4 Final/Stage IV version, with a range from 175 to 305 kW, ideal for wheel loaders and excavators, will also be on show.

These engines adopt the latest Common Rail fuel injection systems, originally developed and patented by FPT Industrial in the 1980s. The latest, most advanced Common Rail systems allow for the precise control of timings and injection pressure. This, along with the use of specific piston crown architecture, optimizes the combustion process to reduce fuel consumption and provide optimum performance. A double re-entrant piston bowl is used, creating two distinct vortexes in the piston crown to ensure that fuel is fully mixed with air, avoiding left over unburned fuel on the cylinder side wall.
To reach the emission levels of Tier 4 Final/Stage IV, FPT Industrial is one of the few manufacturers to offer a maintenance-free aftertreatment solution using only SCR, without EGR, in the medium and high horsepower engines. The patented High Efficiency SCR (HI-eSCR) system reduces PM in the engine, improving at the same time efficiency, reliability and running costs, while cutting nitrogen oxide levels (NOx) by more than 95% in the HI-eSCR aftertreatment system. Since 2005 over 400,000 engines have been equipped with this system and are in operation across various applications.
To further support customers with the new Tier 4B/Stage 4 emission regulations, FPT Industrial has developed its own HI-eSCR after-treatment system, to be extremely flexible in terms of installation. Because of the absence of EGR, FPT Industrial’s solutions do not require OEMs to change the existing cooling packs used in Tier 4 Interim. This saves costs, weight and space and is in direct contrast to Tier 4 Final solutions adopting EGR. Furthermore, up to 30 different easy-to-install aftertreatment system configurations are available for each power node, providing a variety of off-the-shelf solutions for OEMs.
Celebrated for its innovative solutions, FPT Industrial’s R&D Centers in Switzerland, Turin and Burr Ridge, IL, focus on the technologies of the future to ensure the lowest emissions and highest productivity. A supplier to the likes of Case and New Holland Construction, FPT Industrial’s innovative solutions and customizable options have led to successful partnerships throughout the years, including recent agreements with Tigercat, Generac and Perkins.
FPT Industrial engines will also be featured by Case Construction Equipment within the North Hall on stand 11722. Its display includes the F5 Tier 4 Final/Stage IIIB engine, with a maximum power of 55 kW and featuring a PFF, and the six-cylinder, 6.7-liter N67 Tier 4 Final/Stage IV engine, that produces between 100 and 210 kW featuring HI-eSCR aftertreatment system.
FPT Industrial’s pioneering solutions will be on display at CONEXPO-CON/AGG within the Platinum Lot on Stand 7646.
