The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces over $24 million in funding for 77 projects supported by the Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF). With matching funds from the private sector, these projects will advance the commercialization of promising energy technologies and strengthen partnerships between DOE’s National Laboratories and private sector companies to deploy these technologies to the marketplace.
The TCF selections announced will expand DOE’s efforts to catalyze the commercial impact of the department’s portfolio of research, development, demonstration, and deployment activities. The TCF was created by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to promote promising energy technologies.
DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE’s) Vehicle Technologies Office selected six projects:
- Li-ion Batteries with Safer Current Collectors (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) - Demonstrate supreme battery safety enabled by breakable electrode design with partner: Soteria Battery Innovation Group, Greenville, SC
- High-Fidelity Ignition Models to Boost Engine Thermal Efficiency (Argonne National Laboratory) - Commercialization of the Lagrangian-Eulerian Spark-Ignition (LESI) technology with partner: Convergent Science Inc., Madison, WI
- Enable Cobalt-Free Battery Solution for Behind The Meter Storage (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) - Enable a critical materials-free battery system for a behind-the-meter storage application with partner: SPARKS, Castro Valley, CA
- Self-Sensing Fiber Reinforced Composites (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) - Demonstrating a high-throughput nanoparticle deposition process to make fibers for multifunctional composites with partner: Dronesat LLC, Alma, AR
- Simulation Tool for Energy-Efficient Connected and Automated Vehicle Control Development (Argonne National Laboratory) - Using RoadRunner as a framework for simulating multiple vehicles with full powertrain models with partner: Hyundai America Technical Center, Superior Township, MI
- Aluminum Purification and Magnesium Recovery from Mg-Al Scrap (Argonne National Laboratory) - Validating prototype and scale-up of an electrorefining cell for magnesium removal with partner: Phinix LLC, Clayton, MO.
