Sacramento, California will be receiving its first all-electric garbage truck equipped with a Motiv all-electric powertrain which replaces its previous 2.8 miles per gallon diesel version, eliminating emissions and noise for residents.

This is only the second all-electric garbage truck in North America, the other is already in service in Chicago, and also powered by a Motiv powertrain.

The Motiv all-electric powertrain system uses off-the-shelf batteries and motors, which can be mixed and matched to fit the exact size and duty cycle of the electric truck’s needs.

In order to supply enough electricity to move the truck and power the hydraulics all day, the Electric Refuse Vehicle is equipped with 10 battery packs which can be expanded to 12 should there be a route expansion in the future. A high power charger can recharge the batteries to full charge each night.

The City of Sacramento and Loadmaster both agree that the future of the industry is electric, proving its worth both economically and environmentally.
