Technology News Tracker: Volvo Testing Autonomous Electric Buses in Singapore

Volvo Buses is partnering with a technological university in Singapore to test autonomous electric buses.

Two all-electric 12 m Volvo 7900 Electric buses will be the basis for the program.

The autonomous buses will be equipped with GPS and a LIDAR-based system to chart, position and scan the area around the vehicle. Automatic regulation of steering, gear changing and speed will be included, as well.

While this will be the Volvo Group’s first autonomous application in public transportation, the company has tested autonomous concept vehicles in confined and semi-confined areas, such as mines and ports.

ABB is providing fast-charging stations based on the common OppCharge infrastructure. Its HVC 300P charging system delivers 300 kW DC power to recharge a battery in 3-6 minutes, and can be mounted on infrastructure for end-point charging so as not to impact normal route operation.
