Kohler Engines has released two Tier 4 Final emissions-compliant, heavy-duty diesel engines. The KOHLER 1.9 Liter KDI1903TCR and the 2.5 Liter KDI2504TCR engines are intended for the industrial, construction and agricultural markets.

  • Tier 4 Final emissions compliant without use of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
  • Direct injection system utilizes pressures at 2,000 bar (29,000 PSI)
  • The Electronic Control Unit (ECU), with fuel mapping program, monitors and manages power output
  • Features an efficient turbocharger
  • Includes four valve cylinder head with special combustion chamber design
  • Cooled, electronic exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and Diesel oxygenated catalyst (DOC) help meet emission compliance
  • Lack of DPF helps maintain low cost of ownership and limits maintenance
  • Compact size enables an easy fit
  • No heat management issues 
  • Direct injection saves $1,400 on fuel and $116 on oil per year based on 1,000 hours of annual operation at $3.75/gallon of diesel fuel and $4.10/quart of oil
  • KDI1903TCR provides 56 hp (42 kW)
  • KDI2504TCR has 74.3 hp (55.4 kW) power density

In engines of similar or same displacement, the main factors that contribute to an increase in specific power are: utilization of more complex-structure turbochargers, such as variable-geometry or dual-stage; an increase in peak cylinder pressure and the use of an SCR-only aftertreatment system without any recycling of exhaust gas in cylinder, especially in engines with a displacement higher than four liters.
The trend toward higher power densities
Tier regulations have pushed for more advanced engine technology and optimized systems, the rewards of which are more power from smaller engines.
