Two new technical documents and a new technical report have recently been published and are now available from the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA).

ISO 16589-2:2011 (supersedes ISO 16589-2:2001): Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements – Part 2: Vocabulary [second edition]

Scope:

ISO 16589 describes seals utilizing sealing elements manufactured from suitably formulated compounds, based on thermoplastic materials, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). They are considered suitable for use under low pressure conditions. This part of ISO 16589 establishes the appropriate vocabulary, where the terms and definitions given in ISO 5598 apply.

Benefits:

ISO 16589-2 eases communication between manufacturer and user of rotary shaft lip type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements by defining types and key features, which can lead to more effective application of these seals.

ISO 16431:2012 (supersedes ISO TS 16431:2002):  Hydraulic fluid power - System clean-up procedures and verification of cleanliness of assembled systems

Scope:

This International Standard defines methods

a) to measure the cleanliness of a fluid in an assembled hydraulic fluid power system,

b) to verify a required system cleanliness upon release of the system from the production area, and

c) if needed, to clean the system to the required cleanliness level.

The clean-up procedure specified in this International Standard is not intended to replace proper system flushing procedures; see ISO 23309 for a system flushing procedure. Components and parts used in such systems should be clean prior to assembly; see ISO 18413 for guidance.

Benefits:

ISO 16431 can help improve the performance of a new hydraulic system by providing a standardized method to measure its cleanliness level and verify that it meets the level desired by the system designer and/or customer.

ISO/TR 15640:2011: Hydraulic fluid power contamination control – General principles and guidelines for selection and application of hydraulic filters

Scope:

This Technical Report is applicable to contamination control principles for hydraulic fluid power systems and includes guidelines for the selection and application of hydraulic filters. Although control of non-particulate contamination, e.g. air, water and chemicals, is important, and is briefly discussed, the primary focus of this Technical Report is the control of particulate contamination and the selection and application of filters for that function.

Benefits:

ISO/TR 15640 helps designers of hydraulic systems to make informed decisions about filtration and to improve the communication process between manufacturers and users of hydraulic filters.
