Technology News Tracker: Caterpillar Overhauls Hydraulic Excavator Line

For the first time in 25 years, Caterpillar Inc. has made a major overhaul to its hydraulic excavator line, starting with its 20-ton excavators.

The company has introduced three new machines in this size class which have the same core design featuring integrated technologies, electrohydraulics and a redesigned operator cab.

Inclusion of a ‘digital heart’ on each machine provides 15% lower owning and operating costs, 25% lower fuel consumption and 45% improved efficiency.

Zach Kauk, Vice President, Excavation at Caterpillar Inc., says that for the first time the company is standardizing the use of electronically controlled engines and electrohydraulics across the entire hydraulic excavator line.

Going forward Caterpillar will be implementing its next generation excavator program to additional size classes—incorporating the standard digital heart and electrohydraulic system, as well as productivity and semi-autonomous features.
