Managing a modern jobsite is a constant battle with incompatibility. On any given day, a crew may be juggling gas cans, extension cords and different battery platforms. This mismatch of power sources isn't just annoying — it’s a logistical challenge that can stall projects and overwhelm fleet managers.

Vanguard is reimagining the jobsite as a connected system, standardizing power so one battery can seamlessly run every machine in the lineup. By using a single, standardized power source — the Vanguard 48V 1.5kWh1 Swappable Battery (Si1.5) — the jobsite is transformed. In this new reality, power is no longer a localized constraint for each machine but a mobile, unified asset that flows seamlessly across the entire workflow.

Breaking the Productivity Barrier: The Power of Swapability

The transition to electrified equipment often hinges on the relationship between runtime and charging. In typical electrified equipment, a depleted battery pack can temporarily sideline a machine while it waits to recharge. Swappable battery technology disrupts the cycle of downtime by removing the tether between the tool and the charger, allowing one battery to stay on the job while the other replenishes in the background.

Instead of plugging in a machine and waiting, an operator can simply swap a depleted battery for a fully charged one in seconds. This capability provides a path to virtually unlimited runtime, allowing electric equipment to match the rigorous duty cycles of gas-powered engines.

The Vanguard Si1.5 addresses the industry’s most pressing concerns around range anxiety and charging infrastructure. Beyond its rugged, high-vibration design, the Si1.5 features a brand-friendly standard interface. This allows users to swap power between different brands and applications, ensuring that the pace of work is dictated by the crew, not the state of charge.

Power in Practice

The true value of the Si1.5 is its ability to move with the workflow. By standardizing under this interchangeable power source, leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are enabling a complete concrete workflow powered by a single Vanguard battery pack:

  • Compaction — The job begins with a Bartell Global Plate Compactor. Powered by the Si1.5, the machine compresses soil or gravel to a precise grade, even in high-vibration environments.
  • Finishing — As the pour commences, the same battery is moved to a Bartell Global 24" Edger Trowel. This allows the crew to smooth wet concrete along perimeters with zero emissions and significantly reduced noise, a critical advantage for indoor pours.
  • Modification — Once the slab has set, the same battery is swapped into a Norton Clipper Concrete Saw to perform expansion cuts without the need for brand-specific charging stations.
  • Surface prep — The workflow concludes with an EDCO Single Head Grinder. Utilizing the same Si1.5 that started the day on the compactor, the grinder finishes the surface to a professional sheen.

This real-life workflow proves that when leading OEMs standardize on one robust battery platform, contractors gain a level of jobsite agility and interoperability that was previously impossible.

Unlocking Potential Through Standardization

While swapability offers an immediate advantage, widespread adoption hinges on a broader industry shift toward standardization. A swappable battery system is only as effective as the ecosystem of compatible equipment it supports. This is why Vanguard is actively collaborating with OEMs around the globe to expand the compatibility of this platform.

Greater OEM adoption of the swappable interface exponentially increases the value of this technology. As more manufacturers move away from piecing together individual parts and instead adopt integrated systems — combining the battery, charger, Battery Management System (BMS), motor and motor controllers — the engineering focus shifts toward simplifying integration. This collaborative effort to standardize battery interfaces will ultimately allow customers to maximize their investment across a wide selection of compatible products.

Engineered for Field Performance

Standardization only succeeds if the hardware is resilient enough to endure the daily demands of the field. The Si1.5 is purpose-built for environments involving fine abrasive dust, moisture and intense vibration. It features a die-cast aluminum enclosure designed to protect the internal cells from the elements and heavy use.

Beyond its physical construction, the battery is supported by an integrated BMS. This intelligent core constantly monitors voltage and temperature, preventing misuse and safeguarding the customer’s investment. This intelligence also enables connected troubleshooting. Through the Vanguard mobile app and Bluetooth® integration, fleet managers have instant visibility into battery health and get live status updates. This allows for over-the-air firmware updates, which help optimize equipment without it ever leaving the jobsite.

The Future of the Connected Jobsite

By unifying compact equipment under a single battery system, the common challenges of electrification, such as range anxiety and the need for fixed charging infrastructure, are effectively eliminated. This transition does more than just replace an engine; it creates a smarter, more agile jobsite.

Designed, engineered and assembled in the USA, the Si1.5 is backed by an 8-year commercial limited warranty.² This provides the operational confidence and long-term reliability OEMs require to grow their electric offerings.

Vanguard is providing more than just a battery; it is delivering the infrastructure for a more efficient, productive and connected industry. This approach is how the true potential of swappable technology is unlocked for the next generation of compact equipment.
