Design & Engineering Insights: AVL Sees Continued Growth of Electrification in Off-Highway Equipment

Interest in electrification is increasing in all applications, from small equipment to large machines and vehicles.

Kevin Rhodes, Chief Engineer of Electrification at AVL, says the company is seeing a lot of interest in electrification in a variety of applications - anywhere from small mobility applications all the way up to heavy-duty on- and off-road, including mining and Class 8 trucks.

As companies continue to invest in development of technologies which enable vehicle and equipment electrification, costs will continue to come down for the necessary components such as batteries. Rhodes says we're going to see a lot more normalization of electrification and components are going to be driven towards becoming a commodity item. This will be important because currently many components are custom made which requires a lot of design and engineering time.

There are many companies entering the electrification space which will help to continue pushing the industry forward.
