The first large American hydraulic excavators
The photograph in this advertisement clearly shows the steam cylinder that raised and lowered the dipper stick. The second cylinder, which powered the crowd function, is barely visible inside the boom between the hoist cylinder and the boom tip.
The First Hydraulic Excavators
The John F. Byers Machine Co. Traveler was an example of self-propelled shovels built in the 1940s. Self-propelled and truck-mounted excavators were popular for highway and road departments because of their mobility.
Truck-mounted and self-propelled cable excavators
The problems involved in placing pipe with an end boom are illustrated by this rather crude rig, designed by R. G. LeTourneau for a Cat Sixty and used by his construction company on the grading contract for Southern Pacific Railroad's Carquinez Bridge approach in Benicia, CA, in 1929. Ballasted by sandbags, it provided ample capacity for a single section of pipe, but was unable to carry long strands along the trench.
Swing booms and end booms for tractors
The ability of sidebooms and pipelayers to walk with a long strand of pipe makes possible a project like this. Bechtel Corporation is walking a 600-foot strand of pipe into the Niagara River for the Tennessee Gas Transmission Company on September 11, 1954. This was the first pipeline to cross the Niagara, and a fleet of Cat MD7s, equipped with extra counterweights, is doing the honors. The MD7 was a very popular sideboom; fleets of them still turned up in pipeline auctions into the early 2000s.

Towed cranes
At 7-1/2 tons shipping weight, the No. 331 Baby Portable Excavator and Loader was a baby only in that it was the smallest such machine in the Byers line. It was rated at 4,000 pounds or 1/2 cubic yard with a standard 20 foot boom, and was capable of at least two cycles per minute.
The self-propelled crane
A restored 1947 Schield Bantam M47 truck dragline works at the HCEA's 2011 International Convention and Old Equipment Exposition at Penfield, IL. The truck's cab has been modified to allow the boom to be fully lowered during travel and storage.
The Truck-Mounted Shovel and Dragline
Michigan Power Shovel was the first to offer a purpose-built carrier for its machines. Introduced as early as 1934, this rugged carrier helped Michigan to build strong market support for its small crane/excavators.
