AeroVironment introduces AV-900 EX battery test system at The Battery Show

AeroVironment introduced its latest battery test station, the AV-900 EX at The Battery Show 2014.

AeroVironment Inc. unveiled its next-generation, digital AV-900 EX at The Battery Show in Novi, MI. The AV-900 EX features valuable enhancements to the company’s AV-900, the longtime battery testing workhorse for global auto manufacturers and test labs.

“The AV-900 EX incorporates improvements based on input from the leading global automotive battery scientists and engineers,” says Wahid Nawabi, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AeroVironment’s Efficient Energy Systems business segment. “We’ve made it more robust so technicians can perform more testing with less equipment, saving them money and time. We improved control and signal responses significantly to deliver the accuracy and responsiveness customers expect from a market leader.”

The AV-900 EX features digital controls that improve system performance and speed, as well as voltage and current accuracy.

“Digital controls deliver increased system and component level protection so customers can push harder and farther as they experiment with new types of tests,” says Nawabi. “Our customers asked for this, and we delivered - faster error detection and fault correction so they can minimize downtime and save money.”

The AV-900 EX can adjust power as needed, dynamically responding to changes in test parameters and utility conditions such as input power fluctuations, thereby keeping other tests running at the same capacity. A new LCD touchscreen displays test parameters, standard error messages and indicates input voltage dipping or when currents are exceeding limits. The AV-900 EX also incorporates digital controls on both AC and DC power stages to modify system output dynamically.

Nawabi says customers can control four AV-900 EX units in parallel to produce one megawatt of power, providing greater capacity to meet increasing battery testing demands. This paralleling architecture is an advanced and reliable method of delivering one megawatt of power while keeping total system safety as a top priority. The system also features advanced battery emulation and resistance test modes.

AeroVironment will begin shipping the AV-900 EX in January 2015. In addition to the automotive industry, the AV-900 EX is ideally suited for heavy industrial test labs serving developers and manufacturers of commercial and military trucks, ships, trains and aircraft, as well as solar panels, inverters and other power electronics.
